Workshop Description

Drawing people can be really fun, and there’s nothing like adding a variety of characters in your urban sketches to bring them to life. Many sketchers find it hard to sketch subjects that shift, move and disappear, but this People Drawing Party workshop over a whole weekend is dedicated to showing you how. You’ll immerse yourself in studying characters, honing in on details that make your drawing of people actual interesting personalities on the page, whatever you feel your skill level might be.a

I’ll show you an easy way to never forget proportions, so you’ll always know how to figure out not just what goes where, but also how to size it. We’ll learn to simplify and get to the essence of the person you’re drawing, and also look at how to draw faces and expressions. You’ll also learn how to handle subjects that get up or move after you’ve started your sketch.

Finally, we’ll put everything together and practice finding the human stories in our sketches. How do you capture something quickly, with a few lines and little time? Or build up a large scene if time allows? How do you create focus points, and decide what to leave in and out? We’ll walk around and I’ll share my thought processes, demonstrate how I do a piece, and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to then practice and make the sketch your own. I will also go amongst you to help each participant on their individual sketching journey, offering guidance when you want it, and space to experiment when you don’t.

All levels welcome.

You never know what you’ll see, and having a great mobile kit means being able to capture quickly and spontaneously. I was going to have tea with my wife when the photographers around this food truck compelled my to pull my iPad out.

Crowds can be fun too, giving a scene some sweeping scale. I’ll show you how to pick a focal point to start with, then go about filling your composition.
